Here I am Lord, Send ME. Shammah in the Lentil Field

When you hear that phrase....

Bali Indonesia - Hindu god - we don't fight statues
"Here I am Lord, Send me".....

Do you think of Isaiah?
Do you think of people you admire whom God has called and sent?
Do you think of Jesus - Hebrews 10:5-13
Do you think of others you know who have heard a call and moved out into the unknown?

Or

Do you think of yourself, saying in your heart, HERE I AM LORD, SEND ME?
When said,
are you dreaming,  envisioning a glorious victory for the Kingdom of God?

One of my favorite simple statements in the Bible is this....

11 Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. 12 But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.

When a whole army flees...."Israel’s troops fled from them".

In my minds eye, I see people running around Shammah like water going round a rock in the middle of a river.

He is not running.
He is standing still.
Waves of warriors running past him,
Most likely, they do not notice him.  Or they shout back "come on, Shemmah Run".

Resolute,  Shemmah entered the battle.
By standing still in the promise of God, Shammah became the Lord's weapon of promise and victory.
Most likely, he saw the victory of God and the glory of Israel, the promise lived inside him and in faith he stood in Israel's greatest moment.
When all hung on a thread, he was not going to run in the face of the enemy.

Shammah already faced the enemy in his heart and mind.
Resolute, he started them down through the eyes of promise.
As the army fled around him, he stood still.

Yes, Israel fled.   At the sight of a whole Philistine army, their hearts gave way.
They were not willing to live for and in the promise, the vision of David as King, for a united Israel.
The Philistines came to take David down, to eliminate the promise, the people the hope of God's revelation and presence.

Their hope, David's kingship in the Valley of Rephaim, would be no more.
They came as destroyers.  Dead set on eliminating this radical change in the region.

This is not a new story for Israel.
Over and Over God finds someone. At the right moment someone says,
"here I am Lord, send me".

This is one replay I would love to see.

A whole army stirs up dust going in the opposite direction of battle.  When the dust begins to settle, the army far away, one lone figure stood on the horizon, Shammah.

The Philistine's were dead set on eliminating Israel.
This one person standing and waiting in the face of a whole group of soldiers most likely infuriated them.
The Lord baited the Philistines into the conflict.
Something he did on many occasions.

One lone soldier standing in a lentil field.

The real and tangible witness of human absurdity; the heart revealed in an Israel ground down to their souls filled with fear and faithless hearts.

These Philistines would take Shammah apart limb from limb and then ship him around to frighten the rest of Israel into submission.

Maybe they surrounding Shammah.
Sending out their best fighters to finish him off.
Laughing, taunting, declaring their darkness over him.

He stood there waiting.  A whole army at his face.
Because Yaweh was there with him.

They may have rushed him, unorganized and in a furry.
Men falling to Shammah right and left.
More and more running into the fray without any real understanding of what was happening.

On and on they kept falling to Shammah's stand.

The Philistines did not calculate two realities.

Darkness never does.

Reality ONE.
Shammah's very name means "Yaweh is here"

God was standing for the house of David and all his promises to Israel with one man.  Echoing out over the valley,  "who is going to stand with God as his victory".

Taking a stand like this empowers us with divine grace and strength.
Courage rises up, deep within something exceptional in power and promise rises.

We awaken.  Our souls arise in worship and Spirit power into the reality of the new Kingdom of which we are part.
Swept up in a tangible witness of the supernatural reality of God's presence, the promise of God takes on shape and form in the world we all know.

The very power and strength required for such a fight fills us as we step in faith, move in trust, battle in hope.  Courageously advancing in the heart of God as it is expressed in the earth.

The reality of the Kingdom of God pours into us as we pour into action.

Second the Philistines did not understand who took up the stand.

A true warrior.  Fierce in the belief of his own name sake.  A foreigner in the family of David who believed God.   Filled with the might and power of an army, the Spirit of God forged the promise in bold faith and valor.

This lentil field, as good a place as any in Israel to take up the stand, believe the promise and see the victory.

and so Shammah said,  "here I am Lord, send me".

Scripture says, He took his stand.

We are called to take as stand as well.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,

Like Shammah.  Sometimes we stand alone.

Yet the promise of Jesus rings out over us.

"Listen, I am with you always.  Even to the end of the age".

We are never alone.
At times, the advance of God's Kingdom happens in some simple lentil field. We emerges as a warrior willing to be sent, to take a stand, to make hope a living reality.

Jesus hung alone on the cross.
No one really understood the moment but  the Trinity God did.
It was his lentil field.
That battle changed all eternity and ushered in the greatest move of God on the planet.
A whole new family and covenant burst into life through his sacrifice of love and faith.
The seed went into the ground.
Only to rise three days later to a new body, new world, new eternity.

Shammah believed God when few others did.
He stood with God.
Set apart from his brothers.
That was not his desire.  I'm sure he would have much rather been fighting with even a few of Israel's troops.

Shammah was a tipping point.
A turning point.
Not the one the Phillistines wanted.  Not a turning away from David, the promises of God and the future hope of Israel.
Rather, one of the first stones on the new highway.

Jesus believed the Father and walked in his will in love, when no one understood.
The world does not know the ONE true God even still.  John 17:3
Yet, we know him.
His promises.
His life, way, truth.
We carry the word of life, the Gospel of the Kingdom.

What about you?

Are you ready to say, "HERE I AM LORD, SEND ME"

What if you are the tipping point?
What if your stand swings an entire spiritual movement.
What if your act of faith sparks millions on to great and glorious service to Jesus?

Will you say, "Here I am Lord, Send Me".

Much love in Jesus,

Take a new step into the depths and riches of knowing Jesus.  Pray.

Start today.  5 mins listening to or reading the Scripture and Psalm 27:14 wait for the Lord.
Grab some time and steal away with Jesus.
He is remarkable to be around.
You will tap into the grace of God.
The Father sent Jesus to restore us to him and he is longing to know us in Christ.  (John 17:3)
