  Chapter Intro- The Value of Prophetic Ministry

 

The prophetic ministry is intended to do three primary things.

Encourage
Strengthen
Comfort
That may not sound very supernatural, but in fact it is so vibrant, mystery filled and tangible to the advance of spiritual life and power for every believer, that it is second only to LOVE.


"Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you might prophecy." I Corinthians 14:1

The Church is the ambassadorial family of Christ.   Called to demonstrate and carrying the presence of God in the Kingdom, we are invited to be a living vibrant people full of understanding in the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is constantly working to quicken us in the will of the Father. He is also uniquely pointing us to first love devotion for the Lord Jesus.  It is through the prophetic ministry, rhema words, dreams, visions and corresponding Scripture, that we gain understanding of the times and seasons.

As we listen to the Spirit regularly and steward the prophetic grace given to us, we come into a greater abundance of words, insight and understanding for the seasons ahead.

Many believers are not oriented to capture and reap the abundant harvest of grace and encouragement available to them through the ministry of prophecy.

"This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, 19keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.…" I Timothy 1:18
Here is how I've seen the story played out many times.  We receive important prophetic words and ministry (I Corinthians 14:1).  Cut to the heart in a personal word, our hearts are activated in the love of God and the reality that he knows our present day and moment (I Corinthians 14:24-25).  We come alive!  We awaken to the reality of what is common in the Kingdom of God.  God's voice, his express communication to the heart, and the overwhelming witness of his love in the process.  The Father's intention fills our hearts with both grace sufficient for the word and love and faith to walk in it.  Amazing.
Then just as we were quickened we quickly forget.  For the many reasons we face, hindrance, desire, understanding, opposition, we lose track of the rhema words given to us.  Granted the most important words to keep are those given to us in Scripture.  Believers are equally lax at dwelling richly in the Word of Christ. (Col 3).  Without a solid Scripture foundation pursuing rhema words can be fruitless.  Jesus gave us understanding of how we lose sight of the words of God.

Mark 4
  1. Enemy snatches them from our hearts.
  2. Tribulation and Persecution arises on account of the word and we fall away.
  3. The word is choked by the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches and the desire for other things.  All these lead to a lack of fruitfulness.
The heart that benefits from rhema words is the one that "hears the word" and "accepts it" after it is weighed.  Establishing this way of walking will ensure progress and growth in the Lord.  With this posture toward Scripture and placing on top a solid stewardship of rhema words, the believer can thrive in abundance and ever flowing rivers of living water.
Granted and vitally important, we are to test all words against the witness of Scripture, good sound teaching, and simple devotion to Jesus and the spirit and motivation it calls forth behind the word. Most rhema comes as confirmation of what we already know in our hearts; have already heard via rhema or dreams or the voice of God.


I Corinthians 14:24-25
"But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you."

The atmosphere created by love and prophecy is alive with the testimony of Jesus and the glory of his heart revealing grace.  The goal is to learn to breath the air of heaven.  It is filled with every word from the mouth of God.  If we lose sight of their benefit in discerning the times of our own walk, it is inevitable that our way is not as well lit as it can be.
Acts 21:10-14 gives us an example of prophetic ministry to encourage and strengthen. Paul was well aware of the Lord's direction in his return to Jerusalem.  He had also had previous warnings regarding what might occur there. (Acts 20:23--24; 21:4)  As he went on toward Jerusalem the rhema words increased and were more specific.  Paul did not submit to the believers interpretations of the words, as he was already on the way as directed from the Lord.  Yet, each word brought confirmation of his way and that he would face difficulty. Confirmation after confirmation.  There were also interpretations that would have dissuaded him from finishing the journey.  There are many interpretations of this process both negative and positive.  The important thing to see is that God was speaking, the Saints were alive in the Voice of God and there was a measure of accuracy and weighing of the words.

Here are a few key assumptions.
The Spirit is amazingly faithful to provide direction and insight. (John 16:12-14)


The key factor is our continued engagement with the life and grace provided through stewarding and walking out the words we receive.

God's world and way is filled with an overwhelming amount of VOICE. Mountains, stars, his Word of Scripture, the Faithful who carry his voice, and our ever expanding glory to glory faith to faith relationship with him.  The world is alive with the prophetic testimony of the Lord Jesus.  (Rev 19:10)   We are called to abide in deep connection with the Lord Jesus as our everyday practice of following him and walking in the Spirit.
The Kingdom and our King are actively working for our success as Son's and Daughters. God never stops speaking.  Yes, he often speaks on many subjects but the one we would love to hear first.  Yet, even in this there is mystery, seeking, knocking and ongoing abiding that calls us deeper and deeper into knowing Jesus.  We are treasure hunters and seekers of his face.  He is perfectly able to lead us into walking by faith and not by sight.  It's part of his ways.

What is prophetic ministry? 
I have been asked this many times.  It is a great question.  There is a beautiful and amazing tradition of prophetic ministry throughout the Scripture.  Graham Cooke's book Developing Your Prophetic Gifting is my first recommendation to explore the wider subject. There are many excellent books out there.


When I speak or write about the prophetic ministry I am really speaking about the boundless environment of the Kingdom of God and the Voice of the Spirit given to believers for encouragement, strengthening and comfort.  

I am seeing into the environment of the Kingdom of God through the life of Jesus, the Apostles, and Saints today. He is a living and active voice; one of guidance, direction, insight and understanding.  Spiritual environments are evaporated of living water without this vital, clearly important ministry of the Spirit.
As we begin to see the vibrant nature of the Kingdom of God and the incredible repleteness of the Voice of God for us today, we see that the prophetic is like air to the motion of the Kingdom.  As we follow and move with the direction of the Spirit, walking in the Spirit as Paul says, we both need understanding and find it available in abundance.  To him who is given more will be given.....   The stewarding of what we are given is a key piece in keeping the streams of living water open and flowing.  Act on the word of God.  Receive more.  It is a simple way of obedience and love.

I'm not talking about end times interpretation of Scripture. 
The interpretation of the end times coming of Christ Jesus is a vital study.  It is given as encouragement for believers in the face of patient endurance and hope as we walk and believe for a building built by God.  But it is not the full scope of prophetic ministry seen in the New Testament.  I cannot address these topics here but point you to some resources at the end of this e-book.
Some see prophecy only as foretelling, but it is much more than that.  In fact the primary job of a prophet is to teach others to live, breath and move in the prophetic grace of the Spirit (Ephesians 4:11-14).  Prophets are not to do all the work as a front stage expert.  It is to equip the body of Christ in the ministry of the prophetic.

The prophetic ministry helps us understand what lies ahead. 

John 16:12-14
I see this passage as the Spirit helping us to understand the way ahead. As we walk with him, reflect on the past and present, he speaks of the future.


“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.

With this in mind we ask, what is the Holy Spirit pointing to for 2016?  
What seasonal characteristics lie ahead?  What is the Spirit leading us toward?  When understood, these points of encouragement will help us walk in deeper understanding, purpose and power in bringing the light of the Gospel to the World around us?
What follows is just that.  Weigh it for witness and confirmation.  Keep what is encouraging and let the rest go.  Above all pursue Jesus with first love zeal and walk in Word and Spirit  in the abundant life in 2016 and beyond!

 The Backdrop


Over the past few years I've been prompted to explore prophetic ministry and writing.  This is a new direction for me, though moving in encouragement, strengthening and comfort for the Body of Christ is not new.  I've preached prophetically on many occasions and have had prophetic words for individuals and ministries over the years.  Though over the past four to five years this has grown into gaining insight on the spiritual climate and atmosphere of my region, words of knowledge in healing and ministry, and personal prophetic words in group ministry.  I've explored prophetic ministry in prayer, in direct response to revelation, an in setting and contending for spiritual atmospheres.  I've also written prophetic documents working in the region toward the things revealed.  The aspect of this ministry I've grown in most is the stewarding process.   This writing is part of that process. I continue to explore the ministry of prophecy and its connection to dreams, visions, and encounters with the Lord.  In 2010, I began having open visions during worship and prayer.  In 2015 these have increased in number and frequency.   I found the volume of prophetic interactions and encounters increasing to the point that I felt the need to keep track of the dreams, words, night visitations and encounters.  With the hope of seeing a pattern or gaining deeper insight, I've compiled these and reflect on them in groups.  I continue to do this.  Growing in understanding, the Lord's timing and revealing the future and encouragement on many occasions.  Returning often to these dreams, visions, visitations in prayer as I walk in the Spirit serving the Lord, I am now tracking their progress and insight as the way unfolds before me.  On more than one occasion, I've found myself standing in the reality of these encouragements.   We serve an amazing and wonderful King.


In the fall of 2015 the Lord clearly called me back into a waiting posture to capture and listen for his voice on the prophetic characteristics of 2016. 

I did just that. Charting what the Lord was saying over the course of 8 weeks.  I jotted notes, impressions and words from strategy sessions with the Lord and compiled them in my annual journal.  My intention is to always finish prior to the coming year and put out the writing before the change over.  This year I was also in need of some rest and family time.  I am completing this document in January of 2016, but all the notes and major talking points were discovered in prayer prior to the close of the year.

What is Missing from The Atmosphere of the church today? Productivity or Soaring LOVE?

We were made to soar.  And Jesus is vast. 

His Kingdom unending, full of boundless grace and glory. 



Big love flows out of big freedom.
Big love flows out of big worship.
Big worship flows from a heart set free.

 We need to take away the intimidation of the unknown.

Jesus is approachable. 
Jesus can be known. 
Start soaring?
What is holding you back?


David Soared



  I will extol You, my God, O King, And I will bless Your name forever and ever. 2Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever.…

I intend to soar like him.  
Full of Trust.  Full of joy.  Full of connection with the character of God.
Will you? 

    
How To start Soaring?  
Look to the character of the Father and 
your experience of the love of Jesus
Being rooted and established in the Love of Jesus is the heart foundation of Soaring. 
An unshakable foundation, the love of God never runs out or changes with shifting winds, times or seasons.    

Soaring is flying in the Love of God.  
It can be done.  Power to grasp how wide and long, high and deep is the love of God for us in Jesus is attainable.  His victory in the Cross, Resurrection and Ascension opened the doors to love. 


Ephesians 3:14-21 
 
 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.


I like to soar.  





Go Unhinged. 
I'm asking God to Unhinge my small minded constricted teaching, my limited thinking about Jesus, so I can Soar. 
Guided by Word and Spirit, the Scripture and a redemptive mindset in the Spirit's power, I'm asking for my hunger and thirst for him to expand.  To lead me into new wonders of his love and grace.  
To lead me out and through the things saying I am facing a dead end.  There are no dead ends in God. 
Even to die is to gain!   


What is missing from the atmosphere of the church today? 
productivity or Soaring LOVE

What is missing from ministries today?
Could it be...
Soaring?  
The Wonders of knowing a boundless love?
Or more program, timed worship services, and massive gatherings with no family, relationship or close knit passion?  
  

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 


Are we uncomfortable with expressions of love for God that actually involve mind, body, soul and spirit.?    True environments of faith, love and belief are not described as dead.    
Expressions of passion and love for God are easy to see, hear and understand.   


Awake.  Awake.  Awake. 




Soar.  We were made to Soar in Christ Jesus! 


In circles of faith the least concern I see is false doctrine.  
The greatest concern appears to be loss of first love.  


The redemptive power of love needs to be hosted, welcomed, and nurtured with clear focused intention and the power of Grace in the Spirit.

The Ephesian church was warned.  Losing their lamp for loss of first love.  First Love.  Primary Love.
The kind of love that soars.  The kind of love that does what we did at first.
The kind of love that remembers our old life the forgiveness that flooded our spirits and the freedom that opened up our eyes. 


Knowledge puffs up.  
Love builds up.        



Knowledge does not soar.  It points us toward soaring. 
High thoughts typically produce high pride.  


Love on the other hand causes everyone to soar.  
When Jesus has hold of a community and love is the fruit that is growing, love for Jesus first, love for each other next and love for the world without his saving grace, lives change.  
We don't need any special knowledge or teaching to see this kind of love, to identify it clearly. 
 

Being puffed up with high thoughts, doctrines or exacting truth
and disconnected from the Truth, Jesus Christ is a travesty. 

Any thought that leads us into less dependence on Jesus, calls off motivation for abiding connecting with him, or pulls our hearts away from loving the Father like him, is demonic. 


  As I was sitting and prepping to rest.
I didn't want to just sleep.
I wanted to read something that would take me into the heavenlies with Christ.
Something to remind me of my high calling in Christ. 
Spark renewed life in me, something to spur me to run after Jesus with total devotion.
To run after all he is and as deep as I can go.
To run past my limitations and ideas and into his glory and grace.
To lift my eyes up beyond what I know today and into the vast expanse of his love.

To elevate my spirit.
To inspire love and devotion.  



My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”
Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Psalms 27:8

Jesus changes the whole equation. Don't feel a thing? He is still with you.

There are some thoughts that probably should get a shift kick out the door of our hearts.  



1. "Following Jesus is Hard" 

Well yes.  It is hard on the flesh.  Hard on the Old man or woman. 
It's hard on us if we are still in love with the world.  I John 2:15


It is not hard for the regenerated lover of Christ who is filled up with First Love.  It's not hard on the Cloud of Witnesses in heaven or the angels?  


It can lead to losing things in this life.  Yes. But they are not worth anything close to knowing Jesus.  
  


 "But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 9and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,…"  Phil 3:8

 

Of course we face challenges.  Some deep and difficult challenges.  But we serve a King who has overcome.  Abundant life is a reality we can have by faith and following Jesus.


Everything about following Jesus carries with it the overcoming victory of his power and love.   When we walk in the way he walked, pleasing and doing the Father's will, grace keeps coming in more and more.   Grace is more than sufficient to overcome everything we face and feel in this life......if we purpose to place Jesus first in our hearts, his Kingdom and Righteousness first in our lives.  Matt 6:33 / Rev 1:4-5

We need to learn to tap into the life flowing in the Kingdom of God. 
We need to speak the language of abiding and connection with Jesus like we breath air. 

We need to stop talking with,
entertaining, 
nursing, 
and getting our perspective 
from the flesh.   

Rom 8:5-8 


"Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God."

 The real hard thing is being lukewarm.  No one really appreciates it and we end up living in no mans land.  In between seeing the remarkable provision of God and the clear place of needing our sins forgiven.   We are not in good fellowship with the Saints, or good fellowship with the fallen.  IN between, lukewarm is no mans land. 

 

Following Jesus is....


An easy yoke.  "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30"For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Matthew 11:29-30


Most people want rest.  Rest is available as a way of life in the promises of Jesus. 


2. "If I don't feel God anymore, he's gone." 

We've got a life roaring after us everyday that if listened to and focused on causes us to lose sight of the presence of God.  

Full of worries, distraction and desire for other things the "world" offers us everything we need to completely forget that we belong to Jesus.   

When we do forget and spend a day, days maybe even a week, with no significant fellowship, Scripture, abiding in his presence or solid prayer - we can expect to be drying out.

When we run out of emotions or feelings in our God experiences and then face worries, distractions and lack of desire many fall away.    



Don't be fooled by a lack of feelings.  
Nothing has changed. 
The Holy Spirit is dwelling within you.  Col 1:27
We have the mind of Jesus.  I Cor 2:16
Jesus never leaves us or forsakes us.  Matt 28:20

We walk by faith and not by sight. "Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord-- for we walk by faith, not by sight-- I Cor 5:7

Jesus painted the picture for us in Mark 4:18-19.  
When these three take hold (worries, distraction, desires) of what we are looking to for LIFE, we end up drying out for lack of living water.  Living water flows in connection and abiding with Jesus. 
It is life blood to First Love. 
Jesus is the vine, we are branches. 
The vine supplies us with living water.  

Typically, when we are "not feelin it" it's just a short time and the Enemy is at our door offering the things we used to do, eat, smoke, watch.  They look interesting because we are no longer sowing to the Spirit.  We are sowing to the flesh. 

 The problem is, if you belong to Jesus you are most likely not feeling to good when all this gets going.  Especially when we start stumbling back into what chained us before.  The Holy Spirit won't let go of you.  Jesus paid such a price for you he will not let you fall from his hand.  Yea.  It feels terrible walking in sin when we know Jesus.  Thank God he cares when we go back to self medicating, self destructing and burring our pain.  Jesus is not put off by our brokenness.  Another thank God. 



I've got good news for you!  
We actually have an opportunity. 
What the Enemy seeks to stumble us with points out where we need help from the Lord. 
It points to our old ways of dealing with life. 
We don't have to deal with life like that anymore!  
Remember, for freedom Jesus set us free.  

Jesus changes the whole equation. 
You can change this situation right now. 
Look at your 
Desires
Worries
Distractions 
And bring them all into submission to Jesus right now
Confess any sins and be forgiven and restored.   I John 2:1


It is easy turn around.  
Repent.  Receive forgiveness and mercy. 
Ask the Lord to revive you and encourage you right where you are. 
He did it before.  
He is full of life and ready to bring it to you again. 


It is important to God that we learn to walk by faith.  
More important to Him than our feelings. 
Jesus saved us for freedom. 
When we no longer believe God is with us because we have some negative feelings or no feelings at all - He wants to free us.  
There is an amazing, huge, wonderful Kingdom that is not shaken when we don't feel a thing. 
When we get a hold of this truth, we step up to new levels of peace, joy and freedom.  

God loves seeing us get free. 
Being enslaved to our feelings is not a thing I believe he likes to see us trapped in.
