Overcoming the World and Intimate Abiding in Jesus - Two Foundations of Prayer

Over the past year or so I've been praying, studying, meditating and acting in prayer on Psalm 144. 

 



It combines David's knowledge of God as Warrior and Steadfast LOVE.  


These two combined are foundation keys to prayer.




 Here it it.
1Praise be to the Lord my Rock,
who trains my hands for war,
my fingers for battle.
2He is my loving God and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield, in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoplesa under me.

3Lord, what are human beings that you care for them,
mere mortals that you think of them?
4They are like a breath;
their days are like a fleeting shadow.

5Part your heavens, Lord, and come down;
touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
6Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy;
shoot your arrows and rout them.
7Reach down your hand from on high;
deliver me and rescue me
from the mighty waters,
from the hands of foreigners
8whose mouths are full of lies,
whose right hands are deceitful.

9I will sing a new song to you, my God;
on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,
10to the One who gives victory to kings,
who delivers his servant David.
From the deadly sword 11deliver me;
rescue me from the hands of foreigners
whose mouths are full of lies,
whose right hands are deceitful.

12Then our sons in their youth
will be like well-nurtured plants,
and our daughters will be like pillars
carved to adorn a palace.
13Our barns will be filled
with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields;
14our oxen will draw heavy loads.b
There will be no breaching of walls,
no going into captivity,
no cry of distress in our streets.
15Blessed is the people of whom this is true;
blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

This is a rich picture of prayer.  Walking in the motions of grace through faith and overcoming the world with intimate abiding in Jesus. 

The two foundations seen in prayer are founded in these two baseline calls of the disciple.   Mark 3:13f

 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelvea that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15and to have authority to drive out demons. 

 
Be with him -  Foundation 1

He is my loving God and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield, in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoplesa under me.


Send them out.  Foundation 2

Praise be to the Lord my Rock,
who trains my hands for war,
my fingers for battle.





These two relational realities unite to form a sure foundation for prayer.  
Disciples follow Jesus walking in the Spirit through the world.   We can do nothing without him.  Jesus said the same for himself while he ministered on earth.  John 5:19

Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 

In the same way the foundation of prayer is abiding in and through the will of the Lord Jesus.  It is an abiding as sons and daughters (2 Corinthians 6:17).  It is total and complete connection and motion in the Trinity relationship.    


Being with HIM.  This is vital.  Foundation 1

To come to deeper knowledge of the Lord Jesus and his love requires experiencing the very reality of that love in real time.  Paul says and prayers for this very thing.  


"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."  Ephesians 3:16f




The spirit and truth foundation of prayer is real time experience of the steadfast love of Jesus Christ.  We need to up the anti of prayer and expect this real connection to deepen, widen and grow as we avail ourselves to the Lord's presence in prayer.  Learning to abide in such a way is a sure path to streams of living water and daily feasting on the bread of life.  This love cannot be broken (Romans 8:38-39) and is the core connection we share with Jesus (John 3:16).  Our understanding of prayer must include the foundation of steadfast love and the conviction of it's now reality as we abide with Jesus.  

If we gain such a faith filled conviction based on the Word of Scripture we will again and again experience the ever expanding reality of the love of God in Jesus Christ. 

The Scripture points to the revelatory process.  In the spirit of wisdom and revelation we are called to pray.  Learning to rest in the reality of steadfast love we experience it over and over.  It is always a now experience.  Known to us every time we press into the secret place and abide with Jesus.   

Get this foundation of prayer secure.

Praise be to the Lord my Rock,

my fingers for battle.

The second foundation in prayer?  

Going out into the world.  Carrying the revelation of steadfast love in community of two and the message of eternal life in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  

Walking boldly in the testimony of a real experience with Jesus.  Proclaiming the message of the Gospel with demonstrated signs, unity and love 2x2 (Matt 10).   This foundation is rooted in the obedient willingness to exercise faith, follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and walk in the grace provision of Jesus. (Hebrews 1:6; Ephesians 4:7)   

To engage Jesus in prayer is to be willing to respond to his voice.  His friends know his business.  With such knowledge and relationship comes the responsibility to carry out the word of the Lord and speak from the roof tops what is heard in secret.  The weight of relationship with Jesus requires us to keep his commands. 

In the intimate abiding we take on the Lord's heart, understanding, mindset and mission.  This is the natural progress of the Gospel in our lives.  

This is how we move into friendship with Jesus.  Moving from slaves who do not know the Master's business to friends who in secret are revealed his desires and heart.  Friends intimately connected and filled with honor and obedience.  Friends who carry out his commands with faith.  Friends who learn the arts of battle in the Spirit and the resolute obedience to see what is spoken in secret proclaimed in the world.  

A real prayer life will reflect the sending reality of the Lord Jesus.  It will always be coming in and going out into the world.  Anything less missed the powerful and compelling reality of love that abiding in Jesus grows.  HE was compelled by the Father's love and his obedience to his will.  We are equally compelled to walk in faith going with the Gospel that brings humanity into obedience and eternal life.  Through it they enter into the Kingdom of God.   

Battle today is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:10f)  If it was we would be picking up swords and guns and fighting for an earthy kingdom.  We are not.  We are part of the Spiritual Kingdom of the Lord Jesus and we are battling the remnants of a defeated Satanic host.  Our Lord and King will return soon and set up his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.  In the mean time we are preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom to every creature on earth.  We are carrying out the will of the Father as he brings all things under the feet of Christ. (Ephesians 1)   

There is truly much to learn in the way of spiritual battle and prayer.  
Get the foundation set.

Be with HIM.
Be sent by HIM. 

These two simple foundations create a motion and reality in your walking in the Spirit that is constant and effective.  The Kingdom will begin to move in and through you by faith on a daily basis.  You will not only do great things in the power of the Spirit but you will be full of the great love of God that is steadfast and immovable.  

Get these two foundations in prayer!

He is remarkable to be around.  
You will tap into the grace of God.
